Being in the same room as our customer does not a connection make! Sometimes, we make the mistake of believing that physical proximity alone can create a meaningful connection, but it takes more than physical closeness to create the closeness that leads to real customer engagement. Here’s 3 Do’s and Don’ts to help us connect with our customers in a way that matters:
- Do make it easy for your customers by quickly establishing contact with a simple smile and ‘hello’
- Don’t hover in their line of vision, simply hoping to catch their eye
- Do invite them to tell you how you can help
- Don’t bamboozle them with information they haven’t asked for
- Do keep a respectful distance and allow them to breathe
- Don’t encroach on their personal space and have them edging their way to the exit door
